'Spring' ATC swap

Over at The Linen Shelf, Penny has organized an ATC swap with the theme of 'Spring'.  There are 10 of us taking part, so we were tasked with making 10 ATC's to be with Penny by the end of February.

My series of ATC's is entitled 'Signs of Spring'........

Sweet birdsong and meadow flowers awakening

Pondlife, plants, insects and busy wrens

Catkins, blossom and caterpillars

Lambs playing and wild flowers blooming

waterfowl nesting

While tearing my way through wildlife books, I learnt a few nature facts.  Did you know, for example (I didn't!), that the cock wren built several nests and then takes his jenny-wren round them all so she can pick her favourite?   How sweet is that?!

I also read up about a cuckoo bee, which I'd never even heard of.  Much like the bird cuckoo, the cuckoo bee goes into another bee's hive but is not seen as a threat.  However, once the worker bees have prepared the cells for the Queen bee to lay her eggs, the cuckoo bee kills her and then promptly lays her own eggs.  The worker bees then feed these eggs, raising another generation of cuckoo bees.  Nature's quite harsh sometimes, isn't it?

Anyway, enough of the nature lesson.  I'll pack these up and get them in the post tomorrow.

Thank you for looking!

They are gorgeous Joanna! Loving the interesting facts picked up along the way too. Most of the old books I've gathered seem to be the "improving" religious type - even the children's ones!

I for sure could not say which one is the best! They are all gorgeous, Joanna!

Not knowing a THING about ATCs, I had to search the net. So, I came to this site where this lady explains the many types and possibilities for this amazing work!

One thing, though, I could not find anywhere. If it is not a bother, could you tell me how do you keep and protect your work, so it does not "fall appart", or get dried out, or simply turn worn out by age and weather?

You are an artist, Joanna!
Love ya!

What a great nature lesson today! How sweet that the wren makes several homes for his mate to chose from. Your ATCs are beautiful. I love the catkin one!

Your ATC's are beautiful!!! I have to take some time to catch up with your blog, just back from a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. Great fun but now I have to see what I missed while I was gone, and these ATC's are a sight for my art starved eyes!!

These are truly delightful Jo - I can't wait to see them. ( I think the swap went a bit pear shaped though)

I'm sure the swap is fine, Penny!

I deleted your 2nd comment because it was a repeat of the first - then I realized it looked really bad, like you'd said something offensive. Which, of course, you hadn't. Blimey, why didn't I just leave it??!!

Thank you for all your lovely comments -

Miriam, sometimes I seal the ATC's with PVA glue, but because this has quite a high water content it can make the vintage paper crinkle. I have learned to usually leave well alone and just hope that they stay stuck. They re mostly stored in albums/boxes anyway so don't get much opportunity to become unstuck.

Susan, an ATC (or Artist Trading Card) is a miniature artwork, 2 1/2" x 3 1/2". It should never be sold but instead swapped for another. The ATC can be paint/mixed media/fabric, whatever you want really as long as it is the proper size.

Hello Jo!
Thank you for visiting my blog and following :-)
Your ATC's are totally gorgeous and I love them !! As for the nature facts ... wrens are one of my favourite birds and I'd not heard of the home building by the cock wren - isn't he just the perfect husband ??
Happy days to you,

Joanna,

Your Spring ATC's have received so many comments that you may net even find this one among all the others. Can only echo the comments of your followers and add that these are some of the loveliest ATC's/collages I've ever seen. Simple, fresh, and a wonderful use of vintage images. Looking at each one is an incidental mini-lesson - thanks you so much!!

Thanks also for you sweet comments on my blog. I'm more comfortable with fabric and bright moderns than I am with vintage, but both are equally fun, no matter how they turn out ;-0
