Summer Exhibition 2011

Yesterday, DD Hope and I went to the
Summer Exhibition
at the Royal Academy of Art in London.

This exhibition has been an annual event since 1769
and is the largest open entry exhibition of its type.
Over 11,000 artworks were submitted this year
from professional and amateur artists alike,
and from them around 1,000 were selected.

The selection process is steeped in tradition
even down to the specific beverage the selectors drink
(a strange mixture of rum and Bovril!).

(Hope outside the RA, in front of a stainless steel sculpture
by Jeff Koons, which reflects the buildings behind.
The inspiration for this piece came from Piglet in Winnie-the-Pooh.)

(Don't you just hate it when chairs don't stack properly?!)

Hope 'had' to go to the exhibition in
preparation for her Photography GCSE starting next month.
She now has to select 2 artists who produced
artwork with a coastal theme
and write about them and their art.

There were several rooms of artwork, which this year
had an open theme.
Some I adored.
Some I thought were very clever.
Some we puzzled over how an effect was achieved.
Some we both said, "We could do that." (but don't do it!)
And some, well, I just didn't 'get'.

(£30,000 and it's yours!)
But I think that just about sums up art, doesn't it?!

We both really enjoyed our day.

And I'm really looking forward to Monday
and the planned blogger get together
at the Tracey Emin exhibition
"Love is what you want"
at The Southbank's Hayward Gallery.

Oh we ended up in a fabulous little art gallery this afternoon looking at ink and pen drawings of local artists, one in particular John Ledger had a real doom and gloom type art work going on but completely genius and all the pictures done with bic biro pens - love it! You look like you had a great time yesterday - can't wait to hear of your escapades next week!
